The historic 139 year old ‘Grade 1 Listed’ Cutty Sark is a top London attraction and is the world’s only surviving Tea Clipper Ship. Following a disastrous fire in May 2007 this ‘Heritage Lottery Funded Project’ has set about delicately rebuilding the ship piece by piece. The ambitious restoration plan will see the ship raised eleven feet off the ground, allowing a glass over function space to go underneath. Steel beams punched through the ship will hold it elevated in the air.
Raising the ship will help preserve her shape whilst providing visitors and tourists with a unique opportunity to walk under a three masted sailing ship for the first time and appreciate the lines of the hull which allowed her to glide speedily through the water during her voyages.
Due to the very delicate and specialist nature of this job, PHD have been appointed the designated access provider. Along with a range of interior access requirements, it was imperative that the ship was completely protected from the ill effects of the UK weather. A custom made temporary roof, full encapsulation and rain water flow drainage are just some of the solutions already undertaken by PHD. The Cutty Sark will be fully restored to its former glory with a grand unveiling just before the commencement of the London 2012 Olympic games.
