Catch up with our Apprentices

Published: Dec 20 2018

On Monday, our Training & Apprenticeship Coordinator Nicole Pearson met up with our current apprentices to find out how they were getting on before the Christmas break. In the meeting Nicole had the pleasure of offering one of our apprentices the position of Apprenticeship Ambassador; a new six-month role recognising their exceptional accomplishments as recommended by his work colleagues.

Abdi Shireh, who is currently seven months into his apprenticeship, also received a certificate, a trophy and a £100 voucher for his efforts. Being an Apprenticeship Ambassador involves extra responsibilities including future apprenticeship event planning and helping the other apprentices.

Abdi, who was delighted to have been considered for the role, said: “I’m really pleased to have been given the role of Apprenticeship Ambassador.” “The apprenticeship has really helped me learn the ropes of scaffolding and the construction industry and has given me the experience needed to further my career in this sector. I feel humbled knowing my hard work has been noticed by my colleagues.”

During the catch up, Nicole chatted to the team about their experience so far and what they’ve enjoyed so far about the course. Aviaries Ramanauskas, who will be finishing his 18-month apprenticeship in January expressed that he has “…really enjoyed both parts of the apprenticeship; being on site and attending college,” and he has “…found that the teachers treat you as a professional and look after you, so you can go back onto site with confidence.”

Mark Connolly, who is currently working on our Chelsea Creek site, mentioned that he’s always wanted a career where he can develop himself in a specialised skill – the apprenticeship has offered him the opportunity to do so. Harry O’Donoghue, from our Prince of Wales Drive site, said that he enjoys getting involved in every step of the scaffolding process as it has taught him the scaffolding process from start to finish.

When asked why they chose PHD over other companies, some liked the feel of working for a family-run business, others suggested it was growing really fast over the past couple of years and taken on large newsworthy projects. PHD stands by our core company values – Professional, Honest and Dependable and it was great to see our team of apprentices living by this mantra.
